I’d been asked to give a talk at the local school; as the only vaguely famous person ever to have passed through their doors, still they must have been pretty desperate if they’d had to choose me, but they offered lunch and a small honorarium. I said “yes” before they changed their minds. After a brief intro by the head, one of the children asked me to expand on my “life at sea”. I told them that as a merchant-marine sailor during the war, I’d lost a thumb to an accident with a lifeboat but that I’d gone on to see the world.
